Our story begins in 2016 with the release of our first publication: Inspecting and Maintaining Swinging Doors Handbook: A How-To Guide to Egress and Fire Door Safety, and a two-day workshop (of the same title) for facility management personnel in healthcare facilities teaching them how to correctly maintain fire doors in their buildings.

In 2017, Door Safety, LLC, was founded. And in early 2018, we launched our fire door inspection certification program—Door Safety Inspector (DSI).

Our DSI fire door inspection training program concentrates on teaching people how to conduct detailed visual safety inspections and functional testing of swinging egress and fire doors in accordance with fire door inspection provisions and requirements specified in NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and NFPA 105, Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives. Swinging Doors with Builders Hardware, as specified in Chapter 6 of NFPA 80, are the most common types of fire doors.

In 2023, a group of like-minded individuals formed the Safe Doors Save Lives Foundation, Inc. (SDSLF) to carry on the Door Safety's programs and services. The SDSLF is a Virginia-based non-stock (aka non-profit) company that will also be a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational company. (NOTE: The SDSLF has applied for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS and are awaiting its approval, which will be forthcoming soon.)

The Safe Doors Save Lives Foundation, Inc (dba Door Safety), develops informational resources, guidelines, best practices, training, professional certifications, and tools for the purpose of installing, inspecting, testing, and maintaining egress and fire-rated door assemblies to all interested parties.

Building code officials and other authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), architects and their consultants, contractors and their installers (and subcontractors), door and hardware manufacturers and suppliers, and building owners and facility management personnel have important roles in the process of designing, installing, and maintaining egress and fire doors. Door Safety Inspectors (DSIs) work with building owners and AHJs as they perform egress and fire door inspections.

DoorSafety.com’s online community and forums are intended to promote open discussion related to maintaining egress and fire doors correctly.

Our goal is for you to make DoorSafety.com your number one informational, training, and certification resource for both you and your team.
